Player: Raphael Asselin, Canada

The following summary of the 1996 World Finals was taken from 'History of the World Finals', originally posted on Trandosite.

The story of the SWCCG World Finals begins in 1996, in Vail, Colorado. With the game itself only a year old, the first world final event took place near Decipher headquarters. Unfortunately, information from this event is now very hard to come by and I was not playing myself at this time (many thanks to Alex Tennet for providing me with the information listed below). The game was still in its early stages, with only Premiere and A New Hope to play with, and mains decks dominated - there was still very little to counter the abusive nature of Sense and Alter, nor anything to oppose the raw power of Obi-Wan and Vader. However, interesting to note that Joe Alread using seven Dark Maneuvers in his dark side deck!

The final was between Raphael Asselin (Canada) and Bjorn Sorgjerd (Norway); it would be Raphael who would come out on top and became the first SWCCG World Champion. Joe Alread and Kevin Reitzel finished in 3rd and 4th respectively. One of the main impacts of the 1996 finals was perhaps the further involvement of some of the finalists who have become leading figures in SWCCG - Tom Lischke Kyle Heuer and Kevin Reitzel became Decipher employees whilst Carl Mike Hardy and Paul Todd Feldman became Squadron Members.
